Ceiling stains: what to check before painting

A stain is a clue—not a diagnosis. Learn what to record and when to call for help.

Start with the pattern

A ceiling stain can have more than one explanation. Roof entry, plumbing above the room, or an air-conditioning condensate problem are possibilities—not conclusions you can draw from a photo alone. Note whether it appears after rain, after using a bathroom, or while the AC runs.

Document without disturbing

Take dated photos from a safe position. Record the location, when you first noticed it, and whether the area is growing or dripping. Do not paint over the stain before the source has been investigated and affected materials evaluated.

Know when to step away

Stay clear of a bulging or sagging ceiling. Do not puncture it or stand underneath it. If water is near lights or electrical fittings, keep away and seek qualified help. Avoid climbing onto the roof.

An assessment can document visible conditions. A roofer, plumber, or HVAC specialist may be needed to locate and repair the source.
