AXION NOW / HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Mold, moisture, and your health

What public-health guidance says—and what a property assessment cannot diagnose.

Effects vary from person to person

CDC explains that damp, moldy spaces may cause no symptoms in some people, while others develop nasal congestion, cough, wheezing, irritated eyes, or a rash. People with asthma or mold allergies may react more strongly. Those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung conditions can face additional risks.

Address the moisture

Cleaning visible growth without fixing the leak or moisture source can allow mold to return. Do not simply cover it with paint. Extensive growth, contaminated water, or suspected HVAC involvement warrants professional guidance.

Separate building questions from medical questions

A property assessment cannot diagnose illness or determine whether mold caused a symptom. Contact a healthcare professional for persistent or worsening symptoms; seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty. Mold color alone does not establish its health risk.

This article provides general education, not medical advice. CDC does not recommend routine home mold testing to determine whether someone will become ill.
