A small plumbing leak deserves a closer look

Under-sink moisture, recurring drips, and what to do next.

Look at the places you can safely see

Check accessible areas below sinks and around toilets, washing machines, and water heaters. Recurring dampness, cabinet swelling, or a drip that returns after wiping are useful observations to share with a plumber. A higher water bill is a reason to investigate, not proof of a particular leak.

Reduce damage safely

If you can safely identify and reach the affected fixture’s shutoff valve, shut off its water supply. Do not force a stuck valve. For an uncontrolled leak, contact a plumber promptly. Keep away from water near electrical equipment and from suspected sewage.

Repair the source, then assess the materials

Photograph the affected area and keep repair records. Stopping the drip does not establish that surrounding cabinets or walls are dry. Ask whether wet materials need professional evaluation.

EPA recommends addressing plumbing leaks promptly and drying water-damaged materials within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth. This is a prevention goal, not a guarantee.
